Blueberries the secret antioxidant 2008-05-03
You have probably tried sweet blueberries before, maybe on cereal, desserts or in a fruit salad. What you might not have known, however, is that many scientific studies show that blueberries have health related properties.
Blueberries are powerful antioxidants. A 2004 study found in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry compares the total antioxidant capacities of 24 different fruits. Of the fruits analyzed, blueberries were the highest in their total oxidative capacity- in fact, the blueberry dwarfed most fruits by more than double!1
Another 2002 study found in the same journal tested to see how well the antioxidants were absorbed into the human blood stream after eating blueberries. The results of the study showed that among 25 different antioxidants, 19 were identified in the blood stream. As well, the study showed that the oxidative capacity of the bloodstream was increased from the presence of these antioxidants.2
It is evident here that blueberries are a great source of antioxidants. But even more so, blueberries are great tasting, filled with vitamins and go well on so many different foods.
